I was interested in how the trees formed a ring of protection around the reservoir bank from the open moorland beyond. I used thin glazes of oil paint to try and represent movement with the ever changing weather conditions, the changing reflections and the twisted shapes of the exposed tree roots in the fluctuating water levels.

I was interested in the strained shapes and dramatic composition of the exposed tree roots protruding from the dry, receding soil on the hillside. I used pencil to focus on the twisted lines and shapes, and to enhance the living, searching nature of the roots. I was also interested in the strong lines and shapes of the tree trunk and roots which had grown between rock formations. I used pencil using a unified tone to try and enhance the idea of solidity, with the tree integrating into the rock and becoming part of the rock formation.
