'Whitby Cliff Face'
I was interested in the composition and shapes of the cliff face and the striations of colour which were present in the rock. I used pencil and coloured pencil to try and represent the layering of the rock formations. I also used pencil shading and line work to try and enhance the sense of movement in the changing tide and the juxtaposition between the solidity of the rock and erosion of the coastline.
'Defence'
A drawing interpreting where the sea defence wall meets the cliffs at Whitby. I was interested in the contrast between the straight, uniform, imposing lines of the manmade sea defence and the movement in the changing, unstable, natural cliff. I used pencil to try and enhance this contrast between the different lines of the solid sea defence and fragile natural cliff. I also used pencil in one unified tone to enhance the idea of the two structures integrating together.

I make my own wax medium and use a heated spatula and carving tools to manipulate the melted wax on the wooden panel.
I layered and scraped away the surface to create texture and lines. I was interested in trying to recreate the sense of movement and urgency seen in the changing tides, and changing weather.
