Welcome to www.emmvgarvey.com I hope you enjoy browsing the selection of original artwork.
I am a professionally trained artist with a BA Hons in Fine Art and Museum and Gallery Studies and an MA in Fine Art Conservation specialising in easel painting conservation. I live and work in North Yorkshire and have exhibited my work locally and in London.
Exhibitions 2018- 2020:
2018, The Society of Graphic Fine Art: Draw 18, The Menier Gallery, London,
2019, Spot 19, Richmond Station, Richmond.
2019, The Great North Art Show, Ripon Cathedral.
2019-20, Harrogate Open Art Exhibition, The Mercer Gallery, Harrogate.
I work in a variety of media including pencil, oil paint, wax and photography.
I select the medium in response to the subject matter, and I enjoy using multiple different media and techniques to explore the same theme.
I began using encaustic wax and cold wax medium techniques after carrying out research into the historical use and conservation of beeswax as a painting medium. Through this exploration, I taught myself to sculpt, and I produce figurative relief sculpture using a mixture of waxes.
The portrait is a detail taken from a recent relief sculpture using pharmaceutical grade microcrystalline wax, yellow beeswax and oil paint.
As well as making original pieces, my work is available in the form of fine art prints and greetings cards.
At every opportunity, I spend time sketching and photographing the countryside. My work focuses on the beneficial powers of walking, of being in nature, and of focusing on the smaller details in the landscape which can often go unnoticed.
Although the scenery can often be picturesque, I also try to depict what is broken, changing or appears disturbed in the natural environment. This can include broken trees and exposed roots caused by extreme weather, or the way in which manmade structures interact with nature over time.
I look for unusual and dramatic lines, shapes and compositions in the landscape which can be viewed, interpreted and imagined in alternative ways.
